Arts Scene: New museum exhibition, forensic anthropology lecture

Illuminating cloth

Fabric artist Keren Lowell has had her work featured in the statewide Earth, Fire and Fibre and All Alaska Juried art shows. Her solo exhibition, "Groundwork," will open Sept. 26 at the Anchorage Museum. Lowell uses "reclaimed" fabric and paper, assembled and backlit. "There is something humble, heroic, even tragic" about the previously used material, Lowell says. "The holes and abrasions are beautiful to me. They reveal an accumulation of use, of work, of neglect and time." "Groundwork" will remain on display through Nov. 9. She will present a lecture at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, and be available to talk about her work at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 during the museum's free "First Friday" happenings.

Whodunit?

Dave McMahan will connect anthropology and forensic detective work at a talk sponsored by the Alaska Prospectors Association at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at First United Methodist Church, 725 W. Ninth Ave. Anthropologists treat specimens, even those thousands of years old, not only with some of the same methods as modern police lab technicians, but also "with the same degree of compassion, respect, objectivity, and scientific inquiry," McMahan says. These monthly talks are free and the public is welcome, but donations are accepted to cover the rent and buy snacks for everyone.

Latin guitar

Arim Abdihodzic, a University of Alaska Anchorage music faculty member, will present a solo guitar recital focusing on Latin American music, works by Latin composers and selections by European composers who have been inspired by the sounds of South America at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, in the UAA Fine Arts Building recital hall. Admission is $19 and tickets are available at uaatix.com or by calling 786-4840.
