South, Chugiak cruise to football wins

Chugiak won the Battle of the Bridge and South won a southside showdown Friday night in a pair of Cook Inlet Conference rivalry games.

Chugiak got two touchdowns apiece from Derryk Snell, Ben Stewart and Garrett Quigley to crush Eagle River 50-13 in Chugiak and claim the shiny new trophy created for the game between the two schools north of Anchorage.

At Service High, Justice Augafa and Nick Settle each scored twice to help the South Wolverines roll past Service 35-0.

The Wolverines, who have won all six of their CIC games this season by 19 or more points, returned two interceptions and one punt for touchdowns.

Augafa scored twice on returns, taking a second-quarter interception 16 yards and a fourth-quarter punt 57 yards. The punt return marked the fifth time this season that Augafa received a kick and took it into the end zone — he's scored on three punts and two picks.

Also scoring on a return for South (6-1 overall, 6-0 CIC) was Sam Cook, who dashed 76 yards after intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter.

The interceptions helped the South defense score the shutout against the Cougars (4-3, 3-3). Settle represented for the offense — his touchdowns came on a 59-yard run and a 9-yard catch.

In Chugiak, the Mustangs (4-3, 3-3) set the tone early by scoring twice in the first two minutes.

Stewart hit Snell with a 22-yard scoring strike with 10 minutes, 36 seconds left in the first quarter, and 32 seconds later Noah Harris dashed three yards for another touchdown and 14-0 Mustangs lead.

It was 23-0 by the end of the quarter. Snell returned an interception 59 yards for his second touchdown and Tyler Tulare booted a 41-yard field goal to put Eagle River in a deep hole.

Chugiak led 36-0 at the half — Stewart and Tevin Cormier each rushed 11 yards for touchdowns — but Eagle River (0-7, 0-6) scored two second-half touchdowns to avoid the shutout.

Alex Roberts returned a fumble 34 yard to cut Chugiak's lead to 36-7 midway through the third quarter, and then early in the fourth quarter Leroy Banks completed a 34-yard TD pass to Michael Barnes. Those two touchdowns more than doubled Eagle River's point production for the season — the Wolves had scored 12 points in six games prior to Friday's contest.
