West flag football surges to second win

West 12, Bartlett 0

Flag football teams in the Cook Inlet Conference better watch out for West.

The Eagles handed Bartlett a 12-0 defeat Saturday at Bartlett for just their second win of the season. But the victory came after a long string of near-misses, including a narrow defeat to CIC power Service one game after the Cougars ended Dimond's 42-game winning streak.

"There's been so many games we've come so close," said senior quarterback Lauren Syrup.

Syrup threw touchdown passes to Maya McPherson and Abby Fisher and finished with 220 yards passing. West is now 2-9 in the CIC with three conference games to play. Bartlett fell to 6-5.

Syrup chalked up West's late surge to team chemistry.

"We've always had the talent, we're just meshing together," she said.

Syrup thinks the Eagles will be a handful come playoff time.

"I think we can beat just about anyone," she said.

Dimond 33, East 7

Lauren Hines had two touchdown receptions to lead Dimond to a 33-7 Cook Inlet Conference flag football win Saturday.

The Lynx intercepted East three times on defense, including a 62-yard interception return for a touchdown by Shameah Keisla-Jones.

Dimond improved to 10-1, while East fell to 8-3.

Chugiak 20, Eagle River 12

Alisa Arnold had all three Chugiak touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to a 20-12 Cook Inlet Conference flag football win over Eagle River Saturday.

Chelsea Kruger and Carson Head had interceptions for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-9. Eagle River dropped to 1-10.

Service 7, South 6

A first-half conversion pass from Julia Miknich to Zoe Bailey was the difference as Service snuck away with a 7-6 Cook Inlet Conference flag football win Saturday over South. Bailey's catch came after Miknich hit Kyla Pearce for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to tie the game.

South (5-6) took an early 6-0 lead on a Sabrina Ungaro touchdown run.

The Wolverines were driving deep into Service (10-1) territory late in the game when Bailey again came up big, getting the game-saving flag pull as time expired.
