Palmer man gets nearly 90 years in prison for sexually abusing children

WASILLA -- A 47-year-old Palmer man who fled to Oregon last year during a criminal investigation was sentenced to nearly 90 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing two children over 10 years as well as possessing child pornography.

The Mat-Su child abuse investigation unit of the Alaska State Troopers in January 2013 received a report that the man had sexually abused a 5-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy. Both are now older than 18.

A Palmer grand jury indicted the man in April 2013 on 41 counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and a Superior Court judge issued a $100,000 warrant for his arrest.

He fled the state during the investigation but was later found in Oregon and extradited back to Alaska, troopers said.

His sentence was imposed based on a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to two consolidated counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor plus the child pornography charge, according to assistant district attorney Melissa Howard.

Palmer Superior Court Judge Kari Kristiansen sentenced him to 88 years plus 15 years of probation and lifetime sex offender registration, according to the troopers.

The man is still awaiting federal sentencing for a related child pornography case. He is listed on the state's sex offender register because of that conviction.
