Inmate injured in jump inside Mat-Su Pretrial Facility

WASILLA -- A 39-year-old male inmate was injured after he jumped from the second story of Mat-Su Pretrial Facility around noon Monday, according to a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Corrections.

Medics with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough responded to the facility in Palmer and took the inmate to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, DOC spokesperson Sherrie Daigle said. The man was conscious, alert, and talking during the transport, Daigle said.

The extent of his injuries wasn't clear.

The second level at Mat-Su Pretrial is 10 to 14 feet above the first floor, but the exact height of the inmate's fall is "part of the ongoing investigation," Daigle said in an email.

She did not release the inmate's name but said he was being held on first-degree trespassing charges. Inmates wait at Mat-Su Pretrial as their cases go through the judicial system at the Palmer courthouse across the street.
