APD cruiser strikes pedestrian on Muldoon Road

An Anchorage police cruiser struck a pedestrian on Muldoon Road late Friday night, according to a police spokesperson.

The incident, described by police as an "officer-involved vehicle vs. pedestrian collision," occurred about 10:48 p.m. near East Sixth Avenue and Muldoon Road. Anchorage police spokesperson Dani Myren said the officer, Calvin Chinnis, was traveling southbound on Muldoon Road on his way to work.

The pedestrian, a 64-year-old man, was walking on the sidewalk when he stepped into the roadway and was struck by the patrol car, Myren wrote. He was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused southbound traffic on Muldoon to be diverted while officers responded to the crash and conducted an investigation. The stretch of the road where the crash occurred has been targeted for safety improvements by the state transportation department because of its above-average crash rate.

Myren said the pedestrian is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time. Per municipal policy, Chinnis underwent immediate post-accident testing, including breath and urine tests, Myren said.

She said no citations have been issued at this time.
