Flag football: Service cements No. 1 seed for playoffs

South 7, East 0

South scored the only points of the game with 14 seconds left to beat East 7-0 and spare both teams from having to spend more time in the rain and cold Saturday at South.

"The girls could barely move their fingers when it was over," South coach Melanie Sugita said. "I had to put one of our receivers' belt back on for her because her fingers were too numb."

The temperatures were in the high 30s and rain made things even colder. "One of our first passes, the ball slipped right out of her hands," Sugita said.

The Wolverines (8-6) scored on McKenzie Smith's 3-yard run, a play that came after Sabrina Ungaro's 15-yard run put them close to the goal line.

Ungaro also delivered a big play near the end of the first half when she intercepted a pass in midfield that stopped the driving Thunderbirds (9-5).

Service 32, Chugiak 7

Service cemented its grip on the top seed in CIC flag football by beating Chugiak 32-7 in Saturday's regular-season finale at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium in Chugiak.

Haleigh Van Allen rushed for three touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to Kyla Pearce to lead the Cougars.

Kerianne Hansen and Zoe Bailey each came through with interceptions for Service, which ended the regular season 13-1. Dimond also finished 13-1, but the Cougars won the tiebreaker to earn the top seed for this week's playoffs.

Chugiak finished the regular season with a 2-12 mark.

Action begins Tuesday with four games. Service will host Eagle River at 6 p.m. at Service, Dimond will host Chugiak at 6 p.m. at Dimond, East and West will face off at 6 p.m. at Anchorage Football Stadium and South will take on Bartlett at 7:30 p.m. at AFS.

Dimond 42, Bartlett 8

Nikki Forrey ran for two touchdowns and threw for another Saturday to help Dimond wrap up the CIC regular season with a 42-8 win over host Bartlett.

Four other players added touchdowns for the Lynx (13-1). Elizabeth Goodrum caught four passes for 65 yards, one of them a 28-yard TD reception, Lauren Hines returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown, and Tiffany Jackson and Victoria Johanson contributed touchdown runs of 5 and 18 yards, respectively.

Hined helped lead the defense with two pulls and the pick-six. Shameah Keisla-Jones racked up nine pulls and Neno Martinez added five for Dimond.

Bartlett, which scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass, takes a 6-8 record into the playoffs.

West 33, Eagle River 0

Sarah Peters tallied seven pulls and six players were involved in touchdowns Saturday to power West's 33-0 CIC flag football shutout of Eagle River.

Eileen Tanono and Lauren Syrup shared quarterback duties, with Tanono finding Maya McPherson and Abby Fisher for touchdowns and Syrup connecting with Sera Tuiniua for one. Fisher caught three passes for 66 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown.

Bella Hansen added a 61-yard touchdown run for the Eagles, who finished the regular season with a 4-10 record. Eagle River finished 1-13.
