2014 holiday craft fairs in Southcentral Alaska

Oct. 3-5

Make It Alaskan Festival — Noon-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, Sullivan Arena, 1600 Gambell St. For 26 years, this three-day consumer show has featured more than 200 booths of products made exclusively in Alaska. This year's event will feature many new booths, including food vendors that will sell their tasty treats. This family event offers live music from Alaska music artists, free admission for children under 12, free parking and more. New England Fall Fair — 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, First Congregational Church, 2610 E. Northern Lights Blvd. At their New England Fall Fair, homemade crafts will take center stage. You'll see crafts and home art, decorations, jewelry, beadwork, pottery and more from a diverse group of artists. Don't miss the fine art silent auction which will include an original Dianne Barske painting, signed Machetanz print, Yup'ik baskets and more. Cha-Mai bazaar — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Al Aska Shrine Center, 1930 E. Northern Lights Blvd. Profits from the 37th annual event provide children with burn or orthopedic needs funds to travel to stateside Shrine Hospitals, where they are treated for free. Profits also go to aid local charities. Hand-crafted articles include the beloved scrubbies; wool or crocheted hats; porcupine quill earrings; jewelry — beaded, metal and glass; chocolates; jams, jellies and conserves. 'Quilts and Creations' — 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, University Center Mall, 3800 Old Seward Highway. Quilts and Creations is a silent auction of handcrafted quilts, fiber, wood and fine art, benefiting Friends of Pets' spay and neuter assistance program. Quilts are of varying sizes and themes. Preview, bidding and voting on favorite quilts occur before 2 p.m. with the auction tables closing by 3 p.m. In addition to the silent auction, a cash and carry table is available with a variety of pet-themed gifts. Oct. 9-12

Anchorage Cancer Society's Fall Bazaar — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Providence Cancer Center. Come see some of the delights offered by local vendors and artisans. A portion of the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The Fall Bazaar will feature a wide variety of items including hand-painted scarves and pottery, stained glass, polar fleece items, jewelry, note cards, acrylic and glazed ceramics, glass and essential oils, just to name a few. Christmas Holiday Bazaar — 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Moose Family Center, 4211 Arctic Blvd. Many vendors with Alaska-made items, handmade doll furniture and homemade jellies and jams and lots of neat stuff. First Christian Church's 'Crafters Faire' — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, 3031 Latouche St. You'll find holiday items, crafts of all kinds, a cookie walk — buy a box and fill with homemade cookies. Lunch to order including baked potato with all the trimmings, hot dogs and chips, soft drinks and coffee. Come join the fun. (272-0615)

Holiday Bazaar — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Our Lady of Guadelupe Catholic Church, 3900 Wisconsin St. This is a combination of the FCE Homemakers and the arts and crafts community. Start off your shopping with a homemade breakfast of cinnamon rolls made by the ladies of the church. At lunch time there will be tasty bean soup and hamburgers available. In the large community room, find items from antiques to beautiful handmade jewelry, glassware and so many other interesting items. The FCE Homemakers, located in the side room, will have homemade items from refrigerator magnets, aprons, fleece blanket wraps, novelty cloth purses and homemade baked goods. Scandinavian Bazaar — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Viking Hall, 8141 Briarwood St. There will be many Scandinavian items for sale including top quality handmade jewelry, artwork, woodcarvings, leather goods, ornaments, clothing and much more. Demonstrations in rosemaling and the best lunch in town featuring lefse, krumkake, waffles, soups and sandwiches. Free admission. (947-4303)

Anchorage Clay Arts' Pottery Sale and silent auction — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, ConocoPhillips atrium, 700 G St. sale. Look for one-of-a-kind original handmade pottery, from cups to bowls, from platters to plates, from vases to decorative items. Free. (344-2013)

Oct. 18

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Bazaar — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 2901 E. Huffman Road. Featuring baked goods, jams and jellies and quality items handcrafted by the church's Magi Workshop Craft Group. Shop the more than 80 additional vendors for banners, books knitwear, jewelry, holiday ornaments, baskets, artwork, T-shirts and more. Bead Arts Gala — 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Anchorage Museum, 625 C St. Meet more than 50 bead artists from across Alaska and shop their exquisite work at the state's premier bead show. This year's Alaska Bead Society event featured artist is Jo Ellen Vice, who incorporates metal, glass beads, gemstones and seed bead weaving into her work. Activities include glass bead-making demonstrations and a make-and-take beading techniques table. Museum members receive a 10 percent discount on purchases. Free admission. Oct. 25-26

Alaska State Fair Holiday Bazaar — 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Raven Hall at the Alaska State Fair grounds. Look for many wonderful vendors, food and music. St. John Fall Craft Fair — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 1801 O'Malley Road. Meet Alaskan artists and crafters, take home baked goods and "Beans from Above," individually brewed coffees, all on one level. Handicap accessible. Plenty of parking. Stop by the church's booth for baked goods and African coffee sold to support the nurses aide training mission in Cameroon, Africa, and meet Anne, one of their African partners. Free. The Enchanted Village — 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 4802 Bryn Mawr Court. Dozens of local venders and artists will be selling their wares including wooden toys, clothing, cosmetics, candles, jewelry, pottery and more. Bring the family and let your little ones wander through a fairy world and meet the Fairy Queen, then go underground to the world of the gnomes and receive a gift from the Gnome King himself. Head outdoors for the progressive play, where you become a part of the story as you follow the instructions of each new character you meet. Don't forget to stop by the Winterberry Cafe for a snack. Nov. 1

Holiday Craft Bazaar and Bake Sale — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 2311 Pembroke St. This is one of the smaller bazaars but a don't-miss event with many returning vendors and a friendly, fun and festive holiday atmosphere. There will be 15-20 vendors with a wide variety of crafts and products for sale. The church will hold a bake sale to raise funds for a holiday service project. Christmas Towne Bazaar — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, South Anchorage High School, 13400 Elmore Road. This long running bazaar has more than 125 booths of hand-crafted items, perfect for holiday gift giving. Look for photography, quilted and sewn items, art, clothing, decor, pottery, paper crafts, jewelry, glass, wood and food items all made by local artists. Richardson Spouses' Club's Country Fair — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Richardson Spouses' Club. Vendor booths will feature jewelry, stained glass, pottery, quilting, photography, furniture, home decor and more. Door prizes will be awarded; all attendees will be able to purchase food from military fundraising groups. This event is free and open to the public. Those without a Dept. of Defense ID will enter JBER from the JBER-Richardson gate and proceed to Buckner Physical Fitness Center. Bad Girls of the North is a craft fair known for high quality handcrafted items from artisans across the state. Holiday Bazaar — 10 a.m. Saturday, Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center. This holiday Bazaar features local artists, craft vendors, businesses and products. All Saints Episcopal Church Holiday Bazaar — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, 545 W. Eighth Ave. The bazaar features baked goods, jams and jellies, craft items, jewelry and gifts from the church store, a terrific silent auction and a cafe area where shoppers can rest and visit over homemade soups and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. All proceeds fund the missions and outreach ministries of the Church Women. The bazaar features only goods produced entirely by members and friends of All Saints' Church. Admission is free. Friends of Alaska CASA Silent Quilt Auction — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, University Center Mall. A silent quilt auction with more than 150 quilts of all shapes, sizes and themes, from quilters throughout Alaska and the Lower 48. Bids open at $30 and can be increased in $5 increments. There is definitely something for every taste and budget. There is also a king-size raffle quilt, "Warm Irish Chain," made by Becky Rudisill and machine quilted by Melanie Hancock. Tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20. The winning ticket will be drawn at 2:45 p.m. and the winner does not need to be present to win. All proceeds from this annual event remain in Alaska to benefit abused and neglected youth in state custody and to support the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) who volunteer their time advocating for the youth in court. Dec. 5-7

Providence Employee Holiday Bazaar — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Providence Alaska Medical Center in the main hospital building. More than 50 employees, volunteers, tenants and physicians will be selling their handcrafted items. Come and browse and get that holiday shopping done with excellent local crafts.

Lake Otis Elementary School's Craft Fair and Pancake Breakfast — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 3331 Lake Otis Parkway. Browse more than 75 vendors located throughout the school. You will find homemade food, Christmas items, artwork, stained glass, quilts, jewelry and much more. Take a break from shopping with a warm pancake breakfast, a hearty lunch or delicious popcorn.
