Palmer man killed by vehicle along Glenn Highway

Update, Oct. 16, 2014: Palmer police have identified the driver who fatally injured a pedestrian along the Glenn Highway Tuesday evening as Faith E. Gemmill, 41, of Palmer. Police say Gemmill was driving the 2002 Ford F-150 pickup that struck and killed David T. Beard; an investigation continues.

Original story: WASILLA -- A 31-year-old Palmer man who was apparently hitchhiking along the Glenn Highway died Tuesday night after he was struck by a vehicle near the state fairgrounds, Palmer police say.

David T. Beard was found dead in the grass off the highway "along with evidence" that he'd been hit by a vehicle, according to a Palmer police news release Wednesday morning. Police have identified a suspected driver and vehicle, they say. They are not releasing that person's name as the investigation continues.

The report of an apparent vehicle versus pedestrian accident came in just before 10 p.m.

Beard was found on the south side of the highway, the side nearest the fairgrounds, Palmer police Commander Lance Ketterling said. He appeared to have been hitchhiking.

Ketterling couldn't say when police will know whether criminal charges will be filed in the fatality.
