Robertson, Madison give UAA two picks on preseason GNAC women's hoops team

UAA's Alli Madison and Kiki Robertson were among 15 players named Thursday to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's preseason women's basketball team.

Robertson, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Honolulu, was one of seven unanimous selections in voting by the league's 10 head coaches and one of just two sophomores to make the team. Robertson was a second team All-GNAC pick in her rookie season, averaging 10.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game. She was the only freshman in Division II to rank in the top 20 in both steals (seventh) and assists (17th), helping the Seawolves lead the nation as a team with 14.3 steals per game.

Madison, a 5-8 senior guard from Seattle, last season led UAA and ranked 13th in the GNAC in scoring with 12.4 points per game, along with 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. She scored double figures in 19 of 27 games as a junior.

"Both Kiki and Alli are very deserving of this honor," said third-year UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "However, they both know that it's what happens at the end of the season that counts the most, and they are working hard toward that goal."

Simon Fraser senior forward Erin Chambers headlined the team as a unanimous choice for preseason Player of the Year. Making the team for UAF was 5-11 forward Jordan Wilson of Henderson, Colorado.

The Seawolves were picked to finish second in last week's GNAC preseason coaches' poll. In addition to Robertson and Madison, UAA returns four players who started at least 11 games for last season's 19-9 team that earned an NCAA tournament berth.

UAA opens the season Nov. 5 when it travels to Utah of the Pacific-12 Conference for an exhibition match.
