Troopers searching for driver after high-speed chase in Wasilla

Alaska State Troopers are looking for the driver of an SUV who fled down an ATV trail in Wasilla early Thursday after ramming a patrol vehicle.

Troopers said they stopped the black 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee near Claiborne Drive and West Hollywood Road for multiple traffic and moving violations around 12:50 a.m. After a trooper contacted and identified the driver, the driver "fled the traffic stop, nearly running over the trooper," said a trooper dispatch posted online.

For about 10 minutes, troopers sped after the SUV and followed it through nearby neighborhoods. The Jeep bashed into one trooper vehicle twice, causing extensive damage to the cruiser and minor injuries to a trooper, the dispatch said.

Troopers ended their pursuit shortly after the driver took off on an ATV trail, Beth Ipsen, a troopers spokeswoman, wrote in an email.

Ipsen wrote that at least two trooper vehicles were involved in the chase and more were on the way.

Troopers were seeking warrants for the driver's arrest Thursday. They had not identified the driver by Thursday afternoon "because he hasn't yet been charged in connection with this incident," Ipsen wrote.

Ipsen asked anyone with information on the chase to call troopers at 745-2131 or Mat-Su Crime Stoppers at 745-3333.
