Anchorage man gets 12 years for child sex abuse, child porn

A 45-year-old Anchorage man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing a minor and possession of child pornography. He also faces a federal sentence next month for sexually exploitive recordings he made while on vacation.

Kevin Dale Callander was sentenced to 24 years with 12 suspended, according to Assistant Attorney General Adam Alexander. Upon his release, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He has no previous criminal record.

Callander -- father of five adult children -- originally faced 13 felony counts that included allegations of child sex abuse as well as the possession, distribution and production of child porn. He entered into a plea agreement for the lesser charges on July 23.

The investigation against Callander initially focused on his possession and distribution of child porn, but detectives discovered he had also been filming the sexual abuse of underage girls, said Alexander.

"Callander presented himself as a family man who loved his children, when the reality of the situation was that he sexually exploited his (victims) and trafficked in child pornography," the prosecutor said.

Alexander recommended a sentence of 15 years.

Callander's jail time was imposed under stricter sentencing guidelines that went into effect earlier this year. The new rules bar prosecutors from offering agreed-upon sentences as part of plea deals. The state can still offer reductions of charges, but it's up to judges to decide how much time offenders spend behind bars.

Alexander is also asking Anchorage Superior Court Judge Michael Wolverton to impose restitution for "two classes of victims," Callander's known local victims and children depicted in the child pornography.

The prosecutor has recently begun seeking restitution for victims identified in child porn. A recent Supreme Court decision, Paroline v. United States, found a "fair measure" of restitution can be imposed in such cases.

Callander faces four counts in his federal case, two for producing child porn and two for the transportation of the illegal materials. His sentencing is set for Dec. 22 in Anchorage.
