Fatal Kodiak stabbing leads to manslaughter charges

A man was charged with manslaughter after telling Kodiak police that a fatal stabbing had occurred as the result of playful "ninja moves" with a 12-inch knife.

The Kodiak Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing at a residence on Ole Johnson Avenue Sunday, police wrote in a release.

Dennis Fathke, 59, was found on the floor of the residence and wasn't breathing when emergency responders arrived and began performing CPR. He was taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, but succumbed to his injuries.

Teila Tofelogo, 44, told police that "he and Fathke had been laughing at Tofelogo's 'ninja moves' with a 12 inch curved knife," the release states.

Fathke had been lying on the bed, Tofelogo told officers. Tofelogo "had his back to Fathke and when he spun around with the knife, not realizing Fathke had stood up, he stabbed him in the upper left arm," the release states.

The knife pierced Fathke's left tricep, went through his chest and punctured his left lung, police wrote.

Once Tofelogo realized Fathke had been stabbed, he pulled the knife out and called 911, Tofelogo told officers.

Tofelogo was arrested and charged with manslaughter and first-degree assault.
