In final tuneup for Shootout, UAA men race past Northwest Indian

The UAA men's basketball team put some fine glasswork on display Saturday afternoon.

In their final game before the Shootout, the Seawolves turned in a record-setting rebounding performance in support of Brian McGill's 33 points to cruise to a 103-50 nonconference victory over Northwest Indian College at the Alaska Airlines Center.

UAA ripped down 47 rebounds, a glass-cleaning that left the Eagles of Bellingham, Washington, with 12 -- the fewest rebounds by an opponent in UAA history. The Seawolves completely dominated at Northwest Indian's end of the court with 33 defensive boards, allowing the visitors a single offensive rebound.

Redshirt freshman Kalidou Diouf racked up a career-first double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, senior Travis Thompson picked up a career-best nine rebounds and sophomore transfer Travis Parrish gathered seven rebounds.

The Seawolves (2-4) flourished against the Eagles (0-8), a nonaffiliated team whose players faced a big physical mismatch.

The 6-foot-9 Diouf was one of seven players 6-7 or taller who logged minutes for the Seawolves. Northwest Indian's tallest player was 6-2 Lawrence Kaleak of Barrow.

A bunch of UAA's defensive boards came off 3-point misses by the Eagles, who were 1 of 20 from 3-point range.

The Seawolves didn't leave many rebounds on their end of the court. They shot 61 percent (41 of 67), including a red-hot 69 percent in the second half (20 of 29).

McGill buried 13 of 21 shots and all four of his free throws, and Diouf demonstrated a nice touch from inside, hitting 6 of 7 shots to finish the two-game series with just two misses on 21 attempts (he was 13 of 14 in Friday night's 110-67 win).

The best shooting of the night, however, came from Thompson. A 6-1 guard known for his outside shooting prowess, Thompson drained 6 of 8 from 3-point range and was 6 of 9 overall.

He and McGill also shared the ball well, with Thompson dishing six assists and McGill, the team's point guard, handing out eight while committing no turnovers. Kevin Bowman added four assists to go with 12 points and four boards.

Northwest Indian's 12 rebounds will go into the UAA record book as the fewest allowed in a game. It replaces the record of 15 set last season against Northwest Nazarene.

The next time the Seawolves play, the competition will be tougher and a national television audience will be watching.

UAA plays Pacific of the West Coast Conference at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network and statewide on GCI cable channel 1.
