Vandalism leaves mess at Aniak library

Tables were tipped over, items were knocked off shelves, chairs were thrown about and laptops ended up on the ground in a recent burglary and vandalism at the Aniak library, Alaska State Troopers reported Monday.

A window at the library in the Western Alaska village was broken and whoever did the damage appears to have crawled through it, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

The break-in was reported to troopers Friday. The next day, troopers received a report of a broken window at a residence in the village. It wasn't yet known if the incidents are connected, Peters said.

Troopers described what happened inside the library as "significant vandalism." Several library laptops ended up outside on the ground.

"It was quite the mess," Peters said.

Troopers are working with the library to determine the extent of the damage and to inventory what is missing, she said.

The library incident and the residential vandalism are both under investigation, troopers said.
