Prep pucks: Dimond-West goalie ices Service-East

Dimond-West earned some bragging rights Friday with an exciting 2-1 win over Service-East at Dempsey Anderson Arena.

"They're our biggest rivalry, so this is a good win," said Dimond-West goalie Gabi Gibson, who stopped 24 of 25 shots to win a goaltending battle with Service-East's Vandalyn Hudson.

Dimond-West captain Kendra Robbins scored the game-winning goal just seconds after Service-East had tied things late in the third period.

Gibson and Hudson were the stars of the first two periods, with Dimond-West clinging to a 1-0 lead heading into the third thanks to a goal by Sydney Tomuro, who poked the puck past Hudson during a first-period scrum in front of the net.

Hudson stopped 25 of 27 shots, including all six she faced in the second period.

Gibson was equally impressive in the second period, making several point-blank saves on Service-East shots, including a flashy glove save on Madeline Millar's wrister from 10 feet out.

Sophie Bethke tied the game with 4:52 left in the third period, beating Gibson low.

"I tried to protect the post and she went between my legs," Gibson said.

Robbins saved the day for Dimond-West just seconds later when she won the ensuing face-off cleanly, rushed through a stunned Service-East defense and beat Hudson to the delight of the Dimond-West faithful.

The win was the second in three tries for Dimond-West over Service-East this season.

"We're on a winning streak," Gibson said.
