Troopers investigate death of Alakanuk teen

Alaska State Troopers say they do not suspect foul play in the death of an Alakanuk teenager found dead in a metal storage container Friday.

Theodore Hanson, 18, was last seen alive with two friends at about 8 p.m. on Friday night in the Yukon River village, according to an account from troopers posted online.

At 10:46 p.m., a village police officer looking into what was described as an "unrelated assault" in the village found Hanson's body inside a storage container.

"The Village Police Officer saw the container door open and looked inside and found Hanson on the floor and unresponsive," troopers said.

Hanson was taken to the village clinic, where CPR was performed "until it was determined that he could not be revived," according to troopers.

A snowstorm prevented troopers from the nearby community of Emmonak, sent to investigate the death, from arriving until Saturday, troopers said.

The investigating troopers noted in the dispatch that there were "at least 30" bottles of propane in the container, and "several plugs had been removed from the bottles for use."

The information released by troopers did not elaborate on whether the presence of opened propane containers was thought to be linked to Hanson's death.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters declined to provide additional details Sunday.

Hanson's body will be transported to Anchorage for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the dispatch said.
