Better-than-usual northern lights forecast for this weekend

Forecasters at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks are predicting higher levels of aurora activity for Friday and Saturday, according to the institute's aurora forecast site.

The forecast calls for active displays overhead for much of the Alaska, from Barrow to Juneau, while the lights could be visible lower on the horizon as far south as portions of the Alaska Peninsula, including King Salmon, as well as Outside cities such as Vancouver, British Columbia, Ottawa, Ontario, and Portland, Maine.

According to National Weather Service forecasts, however, cloud cover is forecast for much of the state through that period.
