Fares on Alaska state ferries will increase 4.5 percent in 2015

JUNEAU -- It's going to cost more to ride a state ferry.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities says in a release that fares on the Alaska Marine Highway System are going up 4.5 percent for travel beginning May 1.

Officials say reservations made before the effective date of Jan. 1 will not be affected.

DOT deputy commissioner Reuben Yost says revenues currently cover less than third of the operating budget. In 2005, those revenues covered about half the budget.

The department says it's the first fare increase since 2007, and is expected to bring in an additional $1.8 million.
