Kwethluk city offices burglarized, safe stolen

A safe at the Kwethluk city offices containing $2,000 is missing, and investigators say it appears to have been dragged out of the building on a sled.

The break-in at the Kwethluk city offices was reported to the Alaska State Troopers on Friday, troopers said in an online dispatch Monday. The next day, a trooper arrived in the village east of Bethel.

"Initial investigation revealed that a padlock on the front door had been cut and removed," the dispatch said. "Drag marks on the floor made it appear that the safe had been placed on a sled and drug out of the building."

Any footprints left by the thief or thieves were obscured by snowfall, troopers said.

The safe hasn't yet been found.

Troopers say anyone with information on the theft should call AST in Bethel at 543-2294.
