Average Anchorage gas price drops below $3 a gallon

FAIRBANKS -- The average price for regular gasoline has dropped below $3 per gallon in Anchorage, while it remains nearly 25 cents higher in Fairbanks and more than 60 cents higher in Juneau, according to AAA.

The average Anchorage price, $2.96 per gallon of regular, is down about 40 cents in the past month, while Fairbanks has seen a similar decline. In mid-September, the Anchorage gasoline price was about $3.75 per gallon.

Alaska prices have fallen at a slower rate than those is many parts of the United States as crude oil prices have collapsed by about 50 percent. The cheapest gas in the country is in Missouri, with an average price of $1.92, according to AAA.

Alaska and Hawaii are the only states with average prices above $3. The lowest price in Anchorage is Alice Mae's in Chugiak, where regular is $2.73.
