Juneau inmate medevacked after suffering eye injury in jailhouse assault

An inmate was assaulted inside his Juneau jail dorm Wednesday night and had to be flown to Anchorage for medical treatment for an eye injury, according to the Alaska Department of Corrections.

DOC special assistant Sherrie Daigle declined to name the victim but said he was being held at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center on several pending felony charges, including theft and drug misconduct.

Daigle said that at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, correctional officers responded to a fight in one of Lemon Creek's jail dormitories. She said the dorms usually house up to 20 inmates at a time.

"At first there were no visible injuries, but after being examined at the hospital it was determined that the inmate did have an eye injury and was transported to Anchorage for treatment," Daigle said.

Daigle said no weapons were involved in the assault and that suspects are being held in segregation units pending the outcome of DOC's investigation.
