Low snowfall forces ski racers to scramble again

Saturday's Chugiak Classic high school nordic ski races have been moved from the Beach Lake Trails to Kincaid Park due to a lack of snow in Chugiak. The races will still begin at 11 a.m.

Although there hasn't been much snow in Anchorage this winter either, trail conditions at Kincaid have been helped by recent low temperatures, which have allowed for enhanced snowmaking in the park.

The dearth of snow at Beach Lake has also forced the AMH Anchorage Cup race -- originally scheduled to be held at the Chugiak trails on Sunday -- to be moved to Feb. 8.

Bad conditions have wreaked havoc on the nordic ski season. Conditions at Kincaid last month forced organizers to move the U.S. Junior World Biathlon Trials from Anchorage to Minnesota. And December's Lynx Loppet -- one of the biggest races of the prep season -- was shortened from two days to one and moved from Kincaid to the Hillside trails for the same reason.
