Coast Guard rescues Metlakatla woman after Tongass Narrows canoe accident

A 26-year-old Metlakatla woman was rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers after her canoe overturned in the Tongass Narrows and she became stranded on a nearby island, according to a Coasrt Guard press release.

The Coast Guard said the woman, whom they didn't identify, was wearing a life jacket when she fell from her canoe near Pennock Island in the southern stretch of the Tongass Narrows, near Ketchikan. She was able to swim to shore, but was stranded there, the Coast Guard said.

Ketchikan police told Coast Guard watchstanders of the woman's plight and a 25-foot small response boat was sent to rescue her. She was taken to family in Annette Bay, the Coast Guard said.
