Search continues for missing Kwethluk man

The search for a missing 67-year-old Kwethluk man continued Monday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said search efforts are underway on the ground and in the air for Andrew Andrew.

Andrew was last seen walking near the Kwethluk Sport Store on Airport Road about 1:30 a.m. Friday. Peters sent an out-of-date photo of Andrew to ADN. He was last seen wearing a red and black down jacket, gray pants and has shoulder-length hair and gray facial hair.

Peters was unsure exactly when search efforts began. "All I know is when it was reported," she said.

"Usually what happens first is a hasty search," Peters said. "That's done by checking houses, popular trails, places they go frequently, things like that."

Bethel Search and Rescue, which typically assists in missing person cases in Western Alaska, is not yet assisting in the search effort to find Andrew. Search and Rescue spokesman Perry Barr said the organization's resources are still being used to locate a missing man and woman who fell through the ice of the Kuskokwim River one month ago near Kwethluk.

"We do have members who live there and who are participating in the search for Mr. Andrew, but they are not necessarily doing it on behalf of Bethel Search and Rescue," Barr said.

When Barr last spoke with a Kwethluk village public safety officer Sunday, he was told there were about 30 people searching for Andrew. Calls to the village VPSO were not returned Monday.

"We are helping in the sense that we will provide any kind of manpower we have available, but we are also still looking for the two who've gone under the ice (in the Kuskokwim River)," Barr said. "One body was recovered but we are still actively searching for the other two."

Ralph "Jimmy" Demantle, ?George Evan and Sally Stone were traveling from Bethel to Akiak on a single four-wheeler on the Kuskokwim River when it fell through the ice in early December. Demantle's body was recovered Dec. 14. Barr said Bethel Search and Rescue has expanded its search area and still hopes to recover the bodies of Evan and Stone.

"It may be discouraging but we still have a lot of hope," Barr said. "We are very hopeful we will be able to send the missing two back to Akiak, to their family and to their kids. Hope is the driving force behind any search."
