Troopers: Anchorage jail inmates rush guard, attempt escape

A corrections officer at the Anchorage jail was assaulted by two inmates who persuaded the officer to open the cell with a toilet paper request, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers wrote in a dispatch posted Tuesday afternoon that the Alaska Department of Corrections reported the incident to the Alaska Bureau of Investigation around 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

The dispatch states the corrections officer was attacked in the booking area of the jail, where troopers say the officer was "lured" by the inmates to open the cell door in order to provide them with toilet paper. After the corrections officer gave them the toilet paper, the two inmates "rushed the door" and assaulted the officer by "striking and putting the CO in a choke hold," troopers said.

Other Anchorage jail correctional officers responded and were able to separate the inmates from the officer.

During the altercation one of the inmates did attempt to escape, troopers wrote, but was unable to force open a nearby exit. The inmate later tried to hide in the shower room, troopers wrote.

"Investigation also revealed that both inmates had been discussing escape plans," troopers said.

The corrections officer was sent to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage to be treated for minor injuries, troopers said.

Charges of second- and fourth-degree assault, as well as attempted escape charges, will be forwarded to the district attorney's office.
