Tyonek man charged with terroristic threatening after Facebook post

A 26-year-old Tyonek man was arrested and charged with second-degree terroristic threatening after he posted a "threatening" Facebook message, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers wrote in an online dispatch that the Soldotna Public Safety Communications Center received a call from a concerned citizen Monday, alleging that Justin Trenton's Facebook post "caused people in the village and school to be concerned for their welfare."

Troopers say no individual person was targeted, but the post caused many people to fear Trenton. Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters refused to share additional detail about the Facebook post or other information about the investigation Wednesday.

Alaska State Troopers were unable fly into the village immediately because of weather. Citizens patrolled the town until troopers were able to arrive early Tuesday morning.

The situation also caused the K-12 Tebughna School, which serves 31 students in the community, to go into a "modified lockdown" Tuesday, according to Kenai Peninsula Borough School District communications specialist Pegge Erkeneff.

She said a modified lockdown is when the front doors are locked and the shades are drawn over the windows, but classes remain in session.

"Some members of the community notified the principal that there were threats made in the community and they called the district office and we worked with troopers," Erkeneff said. She added that parents were notified Monday and were told to call ahead if they had business at the school.

According to Erkeneff, things were back to normal at the school by Wednesday.

Tyonek is located on the shores of Cook Inlet and is a part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, though not on the Kenai Peninsula. The village is home to 171 people.

Trenton was being held at the Wildwood Pretrial Facility in Kenai without bail; charges were filed Wednesday.

Calls to the Kenai District Attorney's office were not immediately returned.

This is a developing story.
