South goalie Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves as the Wolverines withstood West Valley for a 2-1 nonconference boys hockey win on Thursday at Ben Boeke.
Swayman was beaten just four minutes into the game by the Wolfpack's Jack Savereide, but that was all the visitors from Fairbanks would get as the South backstop was perfect the rest of the way.
John Matson tied the game with 5:50 to go in the second period, and Bryson Schmitz netted the game-winner less than two minutes later.
West Valley goalie Keel Simon stopped 12 shots for the Wolfpack, who outshot the Wolverines 34-14.
Eagle River 10, North Pole 2
Kyle Johnson had a hat trick, Anthony Fan and Josh Linn had two goals each and Blake Rinckey, Connor Canterbury and Sutton McDonald added scores as Eagle River rolled to a 10-2 nonconference hockey win over North Pole on Thursday at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.
Trent Burnham stopped 29 shots for the Wolves, who outshot the Patriots 43-31.
James Laszloffy and Cody Frarey scored North Pole's goals.
Eagle River scored goals on all three of its power play attempts. The Wolves – who were missing three players due to game disqualification penalties in the team's previous game – committed one penalty, a tripping call that came with 33 seconds left to play.
Chugiak 8, Lathrop 0
Daniel Casey and Gabe Momblow had two goals each for Chugiak, which picked up an 8-0 nonconference boys hockey win over Lathrop on Thursday at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Andrew Beckett, Rhys Cottle, Jonathan Banovetz and Nick Perez also scored for the Mustangs, who got 13 saves from Jack Straub.
GIRLS
Dimond-West 3, Service-East 0
Sarah Peters, Tami Suenram and Hannah Hartwell scored goals and Kendra Robbins had three assists to lead Dimond-West to a 3-0 win over Service-East in a girls hockey game on Thursday at the Subway Center.
Gabi Gibson stopped all 20 shots she faced for the victors, who scored once in the first period and twice in the third.
Vandalyn Hudson made 25 saves for Service-East.
