Kanady, Mahoney lead Seawolves in Colorado ski meet

Mackenzie Kanady and Alex Mahoney finished fourth in their respective races Friday to lead the UAA ski team at the University of Colorado Invitational.

UAA placed four skiers -- two men and two women -- in the top 10 of the freestyle-technique nordic races at Steamboat Springs. After one of four events that make up the Invitational, the Seawolves are in third place in the seven-team field, trailing Colorado and Utah.

Kanady, a junior from Anchorage, edged Colorado's Ane Johnsen for fourth place in the women's 5-kilometer race, finishing in 14 minutes, 30.2 seconds -- four-tenths of a second faster than Johnsen.

The result was Kanady's third straight top-10 result this month. Last week at the Utah Invitational, she grabbed second place in the freestyle race and 10th place in the classic race.

Denver's Sylvia Nordskar dominated the women's race in 13:52.6. Kanady was just seconds off a spot on the podium -- Colorado's Petra Hyncicova was second in 14:26.1 and Utah's Veronika Meyerhofer was third in 14:28.9.

Freshman Manon Locatelli placed 10th for the Seawolves in 14:51.3. Freshman Kathrin Schratt was 15th in 15:30.9.

In the men's 10-K, Colorado's Rune Oedegaard won by more than 25 seconds in 24:19.6. Mahoney, a freshman from Lethbridge, Alberta, was fourth in 25:01.5, 11 seconds out of third place and 2.4 seconds ahead of fifth place.

Other top men for UAA were a pair of freshmen -- 10th-place Clement Molliet (25:11.8) and 16th-place Etienne Richard (25:59.2).

Competition continues Saturday with a classic-technique race. Alpine skiers compete Sunday and Monday in the slalom and giant slalom.
