Troopers: Man charged with DUI after hitting ATV carrying 4 kids

A Lower Kalskag man has been arrested on multiple charges including assault and driving under the influence after the SUV he was driving collided with a four-wheeler carrying four juveniles, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Village resident Billy Williams, 47, was arrested on four counts of third-degree assault, criminal mischief, DUI and driving with a suspended or revoked license, troopers said.

Troopers' information officer Megan Peters said the four-wheeler's passengers were 12, 15 and two 16-year-olds. The older teens were injured, treated and released, she said; one of them may need follow-up treatment.

Lower Kalskag Mayor Yago Evan Jr. declined to comment on the collision.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, Aniak-based troopers got a report about the incident in the Southwest Alaska village of 281 residents, 26 miles west of the troopers' post.

Troopers responded and began an investigation, and said they determined Williams was driving a Ford Explorer under the influence of alcohol and struck a Honda Foreman four-wheeler carrying the kids.

Peters said the two vehicles collided on Main Street as the four-wheeler was turning left into a driveway. Williams tried to pass the Foreman on the left and struck it, she said.

The Foreman's damage totaled more than $750, troopers said.

Williams was taken to Aniak and placed in a temporary holding facility while awaiting transportation to the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel.
