Police seek evidence in reported early morning shooting

A man with a gunshot wound arrived at a hospital early Wednesday morning, but Anchorage police haven't found evidence the man was shot at the location he provided them with, Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said.

The injured man flagged down a security officer at the Alaska Native Medical Center at 2:30 a.m., Castro said, claiming he had been shot during an encounter with two men about 10 minutes earlier.

The man told officers who responded to the scene that he'd been approached by two men in a strip mall parking lot near Tudor Road and Florina Street, Castro said. The men asked for money, according to his account, then shot the man in his right leg when he said had no money to give them.

After the two men fled, the man who said he'd been shot walked to the hospital, in his account, Castro said. Responding officers said the wound appeared to be non-life-threatening.

Castro said at that early Wednesday morning, police had yet to find evidence of a shooting at the reported location, and were considering the possibility that the wound was self-inflicted.

Anyone with information is urged to call Anchorage police at 907-786-8900.
