Troopers investigate death in Unalakleet

Alaska State Troopers said they are investigating the Sunday shooting death of a 31-year-old man in the Western Alaska village of Unalakleet.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that they were notified at about 11:05 p.m. Sunday of an "incident where one person was deceased and another had been injured."

Responding officers found 31-year-old Tauna Showalter, of Unalakleet, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, and a second adult male with non-life threatening injuries, troopers wrote.

The men had gotten into a physical altercation before the shooting took place, troopers said.

Troopers said the injured man will be transported to Anchorage for further treatment of his injuries.

Showalter's next of kin have been notified, troopers said, and his body is being transported to Anchorage for an autopsy.

The Unalakleet Police Department assisted local troopers at the crime scene. Troopers from Nome are assisting local law enforcement with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
