Nenana Ice Classic tickets on sale

Nenana Ice Classic tickets went on sale across Alaska Feb. 1 for those wanting to take a gamble on when the ice on the Tanana River will break.

Ice is thin this year, reports the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, and the river didn't freeze completely until the middle of last month.

Tickets can be purchased for $2.50 per guess until April 5. On March 8 the tripod will go up for the Tripod Days celebration.

The contest's site maintains a list of locations around the state where tickets can be purchased.

Residents of Alaska communities where tickets aren't sold can mail in guesses along with a payment to Nenana Ice Classic, P.O. Box 272, Nenana, AK 99760. Event organizers say they don't recommend sending cash and they will not accept credit or debit cards -- though they will take checks or a cashier's check.

Last year, the ice on the Tanana River broke April 25. The jackpot was $363,627 -- the largest in the classic's 98-year history.
