After 100 miles, Susitna 100 comes down to three-man sprint

A 100-mile race held on Susitna Valley dog trails and snowmachine trails ended with a three-man sprint Saturday night.

Anchorage's Tim Berntson won the Susitna 100 with a two-second margin over second-place Tyson Flaharty of Fairbanks and a three-second lead over third-place Heath Sandall of Fairbanks.

Berntson, 42, led the trio of fat-tire bikers across the Big Lake finish line around 7:40 p.m. Saturday. The race began Saturday morning at Big Lake.

Berntson's winning time was 10 hours, 40 minutes, 26 seconds. The human-powered race attracted 137 competitors, a field dominated by bikers but which also included skiers and runners.

In the shorter Little Su 50-K race, fat-bikers dominated in both numbers and speed. James Stull edged John Lackey in the men's bike division by 11 seconds, claiming the overall victory in 2:33.35. In the women's bike division, Megan Chelf beat Amber Stull by 13 seconds, finishing in 2:49:32.

Top finishers in the 50-K ski were Matias Saari, who topped the men in 4:29:04, and Jennifer Barnard, who paced the women in 4:40:04. In the 50-K run, Allan Spangler won in a swift 3:52:42, with Caitlin Oviatt topping the women in 4:55:07. The 50-K race attracted a field of 125.
