Standoff ends near scene of fatal shooting in Midtown Anchorage

Anchorage police said that a man died following an altercation at a Midtown convenience store early Sunday, and an ensuing standoff at a nearby apartment complex ended peacefully with a man taken in for questioning.

According to police, the incident began just after 3 a.m. at a Holiday convenience store at the intersection of Tudor Road and the Old Seward Highway. Police said witnesses reported two men entered the store, and subsequently "got into a verbal disagreement inside the store and then walked out of the store where, moments later, multiple shots were fired."

APD spokeswoman Anita Shell said Sunday that she didn't know whether the two men knew each other prior to the incident.

The male victim was taken to the hospital and died a few hours later, around 6 a.m. After the shooting, a police K-9 unit led officers to the Parkwood Inn Apartments, across Tudor Road and a couple of blocks east from the scene of the shooting. SWAT was called out and a standoff ended shortly before 11 a.m., according to police. Police were able to talk the man out of the apartment without using force, Shell said.

The suspect was being questioned at APD headquarters Sunday, Shell said.

Just before noon Sunday, more than a dozen police cruisers lined the streets of the neighborhood around the Parkwood Inn Apartments, with a block of East 45th Court cordoned off with police tape.

Police have not released the identities of any suspects as of Sunday evening, and no charges have been filed in relation to the shooting. The victim's name has not yet been released pending next-of-kin notification.
