York, Seawolves put on a floor show

UAA sophomore Julia York shared first place in the floor exercise, leading the Seawolves to one of their all-time best performances in that event Sunday at a three-team gymnastics meet at Northern Illinois in DeKalb.

York's 9.875 was part of UAA's team score of 48.875 in floor exercise, which matched the second-best point total in that event in program history.

The success on floor helped the Seawolves top the 190-point mark for the fourth time in six meets this season. UAA scored 190.925 points to finish behind Northern Illinois (195.65) and Bowling Green (195.2).

"It was refreshing to see our floor routines come together today," UAA head coach Paul Stoklos said in a press release.

Besides York's winning performance, UAA's effort on floor included a career-high 9.8 from Kallie Randolph, a 9.75 from Simone Penker and 9.725s from M'Rcy Matsunami and Morgan Cook.

Matsunami produced UAA's only other top-three individual performance, scoring 9.775 to finish third in uneven parallel bars.

"Julia and Kallie were outstanding on (floor exercise), and M'rcy really stuck her difficult maneuver on bars," Stoklos said.

In balance beam, Penker finished a team-high 10th with a 9.65, and in vault, Matsunami and Cook tied for 11th place with 9.7s.

Matsunami led the Seawolves in the all-around with a 38.625, good for second place.

UAA returns to action Feb. 27 and March 1 when it hosts Centenary College at the Alaska Airlines Center.
