Lawmaker says daylight saving time is important for Southeast Alaska

JUNEAU — A Juneau lawmaker said the proposed daylight saving time exemption would mean a loss of useful light in Southeast Alaska.

During the Senate minority press conference Wednesday, Sen. Dennis Egan said the region already took a hit to evening daylight when it left Pacific time for Alaska time in the 1980s.

Daylight saving time restores light for part of the year. He says losing it would be problematic for the tourism industry, fishermen and others.

Sen. Anna MacKinnon introduced a bill that would stop Alaska from switching its clocks for daylight saving time each spring.

Egan said more than 80 constituents from southeast Alaska have contacted him in opposition to the bill.

Egan said that if the bill progresses, he will look at exempting southeast Alaska.
