FAIRBANKS -- The North Pole City Council says city residents can use marijuana on private property, in plain view of the public, as long as it's not a nuisance.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the provision is part of a marijuana ordinance approved Tuesday.
It establishes a $100 fine for consuming marijuana in a North Pole public place, defined as streets, sidewalks, parking lots, businesses, parks and hallways, lobbies and doorways of hotels and apartment buildings.
A person testifying on the ordinance, Don Penrod, says the council should have defined "nuisance" and that it's been left open to interpretation.
The ordinance says "a person who consumes marijuana must take reasonable precautions to ensure consumption is not a nuisance to neighboring properties."
State voters in November approved legalizing recreational use of marijuana.
