Arts Scene: Joffrey Ballet, the Bard and how to connect with anyone, anywhere

Dance

Ballet live

The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra will host members of the Joffrey Ballet company in a program that includes Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," Stravinsky's "Firebird" and Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet." It's symphonic music meant to be danced to and dancing as it's meant to be accompanied -- by live music. Ronald Foster is the guest conductor for the concert, which takes place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, in Atwood Concert Hall. Tickets are available at centertix.net.

Theater

Talking about the Bard

Shakespeare scholars Toby Widdicombe and Sharon Emmerichs from UAA's Department of English will lead a discussion panel following the March 1 performance of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." The play by modern playwright Tom Stoppard looks at "Hamlet" -- and much more, Horatio -- through the eyes of two minor characters and is considered to be a masterpiece in its own right. Performances of "Rosencrantz" continue through March 8 at UAA's Mainstage, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. General admission is $18 at www.uaatix.com or by calling 786-1766.

Photography

National Geographic shooter

Photographer Annie Griffiths, whose work has often been featured in National Geographic, will present a lavish slide-talk at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in the Discovery Theatre. Griffiths has done work in far-flung places like Syria, Pakistan and Africa. In addition to having to understand her camera, she's needed to develop skills that get her to unique situations and subjects. Hence the title of her talk, "Connect with Anybody, Anywhere." This is part of the National Geographic Live Anchorage Speaker Series sponsored by the Anchorage Museum. Tickets are $39 at centertix.net.
