Marshall men charged with herding moose on Yukon River with snowmachine, ATV

Two Western Alaska men have been charged with a misdemeanor after Alaska State Troopers say they herded moose with an ATV and a snowmachine, then shot one of the moose.

According to an online dispatch, on Feb. 4, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Bethel received a report of a video said to show Nicholas Changsak, 26, and Paulpius Myers, 28, both of Marshall, harassing 15 to 20 moose with the motorized vehicles on Jan. 31.

After investigating, troopers said they found the men had been herding the moose on the Yukon River with the vehicles, a short way downriver from Marshall. It is illegal to use motorized vehicles to harass or herd game in Alaska.

Additionally, troopers said, Myers is accused of shooting one of the moose without a valid general harvest ticket for Game Management Unit 18.

Troopers said both men have been charged with the misdemeanor crime of unlawful methods of taking game. Myers was also cited for failing to have and failing to validate a harvest ticket.

Both men are set to appear in district court in St. Mary's. They face up to a year in jail, as well as a $10,000 fine.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said troopers could not release the video because it is part of an ongoing investigation.
