East girls, West boys cruise in 1st round of CIC hoops

The Cook Inlet Conference's regular-season champions, who blew through league play undefeated, predictably cruised to victories Monday night in the opening round of the conference tournament at West High.

The East High girls, who ran the regular-season table at 14-0, blew out to a 19-point lead after one quarter and eased to a 64-21 victory over Eagle River, which didn't win a regular-season conference games.

West's boys, who like East's girls racked a perfect conference season, raced to a 33-point halftime lead and made easy work of Chugiak, 83-33.

Sandin Kidder led the Thunderbird girls with 14 points, Kaylonee Thompson added 12, Lorna Suaava furnished 10 and Kalolaine Uhila contributed nine.

Michaela Brown led Eagle River with nine points.

Da'Zhon Wyche, the conference boys Player of the Year for West, bagged 25 points. He also added five assists.

West's Devontee Doutrive added 19 points and snagged six offensive rebounds among his seven boards. Brandon Huffman added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Zach Philibrick led the Mustangs with 16 points.

The conference tournament continues Tuesday with the second-seeded Dimond girls taking on seventh-seeded Bartlett at 5:30 p.m. and the second-seeded Service boys meeting seventh-seeded Eagle River at 7 p.m.
