West girls, Bartlett boys advance in CIC hoops

The West High girls rallied from a three-point deficit entering the fourth quarter Thursday and used 23 points each from Marshala Eady and Theyoung Puoy to beat South 67-62 in the Cook Inlet Conference basketball tournament at West.

Fifth-seeded West shot 57 percent from the field in the second half against fourth-seeded South.

Eady and Puoy proved a tough tandem. Both furnished 10 rebounds and Eady, who hit all three of her 3-point attempts, added six assists, two blocks and two steals. Puoy generated four assists and three blocks.

West advanced to play top-seeded East in a 6:30 p.m. semifinal Friday. The other semi pits third-seeded Chugiak against second-seeded Dimond at 3 p.m.

Zulai Cole paced the Wolverines with a game-high 26 points. She hit all 12 of her free throws and contributed five of her team's 10 assists.

Sabrina Ungaro added 13 points, five rebounds and five steals for South.

In boys action, fifth-seeded Bartlett raced to a 16-point first-quarter lead over fourth-seeded Dimond and held on for a 59-56 victory.

Judah Manuel led Bartlett with 16 points, and Duol Yat furnished 12 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks. Bentiu Panoam of the Golden Bears contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Ryan Trailer added 10 points.

Carlos Diaz scored 15 points for Dimond, and also grabbed 10 rebounds, seven of them on the offensive boards. Muhammad Cole scored 13 points for the Lynx.

Bartlett advanced to a 7 p.m. semifinal against top-seeded West. The other semi features East against Service at 4:45 p.m.
