Carbon monoxide poisoning suspected in death at Summit Lake cabin

A Fairbanks man died over the weekend and two others who tried to help him needed medical attention in a case of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, Alaska State Troopers said in an online dispatch posted Tuesday.

Shortly before midnight Saturday, troopers in Fairbanks received a report that 58-year-old Daniel Whitlow was "in need of medical attention," at a Summit Lake cabin, south of Delta Junction.

Upon arrival, troopers found Whitlow's wife and a female family friend performing CPR on Whitlow inside of a generator shed. All three were removed from the structure, as there were "nauseous fumes, suspected to be carbon monoxide" inside of the shed, troopers said.

Whitlow was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, troopers said.

The two women were treated by medical responders from Delta for possible carbon monoxide exposure.

The State Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy on Whitlow. Foul play is not suspected.
