One dead, 3 injured in Glenn Highway crash

Troopers say one person died and three others were injured Thursday evening in a crash on the northbound Glenn Highway just beyond the Knik River bridge.

The wreck was reported at 6:02 p.m. A vehicle had crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic, smashing into an RV and a Department of Public Safety vehicle, Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman, wrote in an email.

The passenger of the RV was declared dead on scene.* Two of the RV's passengers and the drivers of the other vehicles were taken to the hospital, Peters said.

Alex Vander Molen, 19, of Eagle River, said he was driving home from Wasilla when he saw the crashed vehicles and pulled over to help.

An RV and pickup sat near the highway's median, both badly damaged, he said. A van nearby was damaged as well.

The crash briefly closed both northbound lanes of the highway Thursday evening, according to an Anchorage Police Department news alert.

*Editor's note: A story published on B-2 Friday about a fatal accident on the Glenn Highway incorrectly identified the person who died. Alaska State Troopers initially said the driver of an RV died and revised their report Friday to say the passenger died and the driver was hospitalized.
