Troopers: Spike strip near Kenai River bridge ends police chase

A 55-year-old Kenai man was arrested after leading troopers on a chase Tuesday afternoon that ended with officers using a spike strip to stop his vehicle, Alaska State Troopers said.

In an online dispatch troopers wrote that Lawrence Karella was driving a Dodge sedan when he passed in the no passing zone on Kalifornsky Beach Road.

Troopers attempted to pull the sedan over, but Karella did not stop for several miles and tried to elude troopers and officers with the Kenai Police Department, troopers said, before they were able to successfully deploy a spike strip at the Kenai River bridge, to stop the car, they said.

Troopers said the car could not continue because of its flattened tires.

Karella was arrested for failing to stop for a peace officer, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. He was also found to be subject to outstanding warrants for a hit and run and tampering with evidence.

He was taken to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility and held without bail.
