Norwegian musher wins rookie of the year award, Buser slips to 22nd

Mushers continued to dribble into Nome Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

By midnight Wednesday, Wade Marrs, Ken Anderson and Nicolas Petit had arrived to round out the top 10. As of noon Thursday, the top 25 finishers were safely in Nome, including Rookie of the Year Thomas Waerner of Norway in 17th, one spot ahead of fellow rookie Jason Campeau of Canada, who trailed the Norwegian by about 78 minutes.

Hugh Neff, the 2012 Yukon Quest champ came in at 6:25 a.m. to secure the 19th spot.

Past champions Martin Buser -- a four-time winner from Big Lake -- and John Baker, the 2011 champ from Kotzebue, came in around dawn. Baker arrived in 21st, about a half-hour in front of Buser in 22nd. By then, the finisher's prize money was down to $10,200, far less than the $70,000 that champion Dallas Seavey of Willow earned early Wednesday morning.

Also notable was the overnight finish of Australian Christian Turner, who ran Seavey's puppy team to a rock-solid 15th place finish. Turner, 26, improved his position by 23 spots from his rookie run in 2014 and is clearly in the running for the Most Improved Musher award at the Iditarod banquet Sunday night.

The top 30 finishers earn prize money. Mushers who finish lower than that get $1,049 for their efforts.
