Anchorage police: Overnight shooting, stabbing, crash involved alcohol abuse

Anchorage police said Saturday they responded to three unrelated early-morning incidents involving abuse of alcohol.

The first occurred shortly after midnight when police responded to a hospital. A 16-year-old boy had been dropped at the emergency room with a gunshot wound in his thigh. The boy reportedly had been accidentally shot by his friend in an incident on the 1300 block of Chirikof Court.

Officers went to the residence, where they determined that the 16-year-old and a 14-year-old had been drinking alcohol. The 14-year-old was "playing around with a gun when it went off," striking the 16-year-old in the leg, police wrote.

The 14-year-old was taken to McLaughlin Youth Center, charged with misconduct involving a weapon in the fourth degree, assault in the second degree and misconduct involving a weapon in the fifth degree.

The second incident occurred just before 4 a.m., police wrote, when officers responded to a single-vehicle crash on the outbound Glenn Highway just before the Muldoon Road exit.

"A blue sedan had struck a large section of guard rail, stretching the guard rail across all four lanes of traffic," police wrote.

The vehicle's engine was missing and parts of the sedan had broken off.

The driver, Lance Hathaway Jr., 24, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Further investigation found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and had nearly twice the legal breath alcohol limit of 0.08, police said. Hathaway was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

The third incident occurred just after 6 a.m., police wrote, when officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a mobile home on the 3200 block of Penland Parkway in East Anchorage.

Margaret Mary Tarrant, 32, was inside the trailer bleeding from her backside and smelling strongly of alcohol, according to police. She had gotten into an altercation with another woman, who "struck Tarrant with a knife in self-defense," police wrote.

Tarrant was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. After further investigation, she was arrested and charged with two counts of assault in the fourth degree.
