Alaska 3rd from bottom on list of best states for retirees

Alaska may be the Last Frontier, but it is also one of the last places in which people might want to retire, according to a financial tracking website.

Bankrate.com again listed Alaska as the 48th worst state for retirees, ahead of only New York (49) and Arkansas (50).

Bankrate.com said it rated all states on weather, crime, taxes, well-being for seniors and health care for retirees. Apartment rental rates of 40 percent above the national average and home prices 60 percent higher than the national average were major contributing factors to the state's low ranking, according to bankrate.com, as was the state's highest per capita rape rate.

But weather was also a contributing factor to Alaska's low ranking.

"In Anchorage, summers are short and temperatures typically don't go over 60 degrees," Bankrate wrote in its annual report.
