DEC: Dalton Highway crash spills unknown quantity of fuel

A tractor-trailer operated by Tena Trucking rolled into a ditch near mile 58 of the Dalton Highway on Tuesday morning, spilling an unknown amount of fuel, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said.

The tractor-trailer was traveling northbound en route to Deadhorse from Fairbanks when it went off of the side of the road at milepost 58.6, near the Yukon River crossing, the DEC wrote.

The ruptured portion of container held about 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Tena Trucking is removing fuel remaining in the tanker while a DEC responder monitors the site, the agency said. When that step is completed, the truck will be taken away, and contaminated snow, debris and soil will be removed.

DEC officials said they believed the driver was uninjured in the accident.

Calls to Tena were not immediately returned.
