Alaska teams go 6-3 on Day 1 of USA Hockey Youth Nationals

Alaska teams went 6-3 Thursday on the opening day of pool play at USA Hockey Youth Nationals across the nation.

Alaska's three girls teams went 2-1 and its six boys teams went 4-2 on the first of three days of pool play.

All nine Alaska teams are competing in Tier II, the second level of youth hockey in America.

Following pool play, quarterfinals and semifinals are Sunday, with championship games set for Monday.

Here's how the Alaskans fared Thursday:

GIRLS

19 and under – Abigail Brice scored with four minutes left in regulation to lift the Alaska Icebreakers to a 3-2 win over the Armstrong Arrows (Pennsylvania) in East Lansing, Michigan.

Jade Meier furnished the Icebreakers one goal and one assist, Mackenzie Sylvester generated a goal, Jessica Carlson assisted on all three goals and Aubrielle Champagne made 15 saves.

16 and under – Gabrielle Gibson shut down the Steel City Selects (Pennsylvania) to backstop Team Alaska to a 3-0 win in East Lansing.

Emily Kubichek paced the Alaskans with one goal and one assist, and Mikayla Lantto and Kaia Victorino scored goals.

14 and under – Anna Sheldon scored two goals and Mychaela Pitta added one, but the Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association Ice Hawks fell 4-3 to the Gilmour Sabres (Ohio) in East Lansing.

BOYS

18 and under – Codie Cope delivered the goal for the Anchorage North Stars, who fell 5-1 to Team Ohio Black in Troy, Michigan.

The Fairbanks Arctic Lions, playing in the same 2A division as the North Stars in Troy, received one goal and an assist from Ronald Geil, and a goal from Cameron Teel, but lost 6-2 to Sylvania (Ohio).

16 and under – John Fabeck's overtime strike off a Tanner Edwards assist delivered the Alaska Oilers a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators (Tennessee) in Plano, Texas.

Hunter Borst scored a first-period goal for the Oilers, who outshot the Predators 36-18 and received 17 saves from Jack Walters.

In the same tournament, Joseph Diltz stopped 18 saves for the shutout and Joshua Boyer bagged two goals to spark the Alaska Junior Avalanche to a 4-0 victory over the Carolina Lightning (North Carolina).

Hayden Moistener and Kyle Doscher also scored goals for the Avs.

14 and under – Isaiah Saville's flawless goaltending, Gavin Hardy's two goals and Sullivan Mack's four points lifted the Anchorage Mighty Moose to a 7-0 win over the Carolina Stars in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mack furnished one goal and three helpers. The Mighty Moose also received goals from Christopher Lottridge, Blake Hausinger, Trevor Sawicki and Ryan Bailey.

In the same division, the Mat-Su Eagles received goals from four players, two assists from Austin Stephens and stellar goaltending from Alexander Gamez in a 4-1 win over the Ashburn Xtreme (Virginia).

Grant Epple, Zachary Plucinski, Porter Schachle and Max Helgeson scored for the Eagles, with Helgeson's strike coming short-handed.

Other Alaskans -- Gage Mackie of Anchorage had one goal and one assist to help Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minnesota) to an 11-0 win over the Amherst Knights in the 18 and under boys division of the Tier I tournament in Amherst, New York.

Cole Mackie of Anchorage contributed an assist in Shattuck's 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars Elite (Texas) in the Tier I 14 and under boys tournament in Amherst.

Taylor Schwalbe of Anchorage furnished a goal for Shattuck in a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Revolution in the Tier I girls 19 and under tournament in Green Bay, Wisconsin. And Clair DeGeorge of Anchorage had an assist for Shattuck in a 4-1 win over Little Caesars (Michigan) at the girls Tier I 16 and under tournament in Green Bay.
